Hi! My name is Rachel Wahlquist and I am a teacher in the Primary School. I have been working at BBIS since 2008; I’ve taught in EE, Grades 2, 4, and 5, and worked briefly in the EAL department before going on parent leave in 2014 and 2016. This year, I am excited to teach Grade 3 for the first time. My husband, Erman, is an actor and a teacher. We have two daughters – Abralinn is almost 4 years old and Alera is almost 2 years old.
I love teaching at BBIS because I love the community created by the school. Despite being far from family and having my comfort zone challenged frequently with the German language, I have found a safety network through friends and colleagues in the BBIS community. When challenges have arisen, it has been heartwarming to see how my BBIS friends are willing to help out. The other thing I love about the school is that I still get to see and interact with former students who have moved onto the secondary school. It’s especially poignant for me that the Grade 2 students I taught when I first moved to Berlin will be graduating from BBIS next May!
I love to read! Some of my favorite books and authors are:
• Harry Potter (J.K. Rowling)
• Holes (Louis Sachar)
• Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Roald Dahl)
• Wait Till Helen Comes (Mary Downing Hahn)
• Captain Underpants (Dav Pilkey)
• Duck on a Bike (David Shannon)
• Have You Seen My Hat? (Jon Klassen)
